A Daughter's Influence

I believe that everyone has at least one person who had a major impact in their lives. This is especially true for me with my daughter, Alexis. She in many ways has had a big impact on my life. When she came into my life, I immediately knew I had to grow up. She taught me how to enjoy the little things in life and I realized I love being a mom and watching her grow.

Everyone’s lives change when they find out they are expecting and most people are prepared. But I was only 18 when I found out I was pregnant. Before that point, I didn’t have a job or care in the world. But the moment I found out I was expecting, I immediately stopped my bad habits and immature ways. Having a child helped me to grow and become a more responsible, mature adult. I started caring more, went out and found a job, and started planning for our future.
With Alexis in my life, I’ve learned to enjoy and appreciate the little things. She has taught me that stopping to smell the roses, or dandelions, is actually worthwhile. I’ve come to realize that bugs are icky but butterflies are cool. Her laughter is like music to my ears and her hugs are my therapy. I really enjoy spending time with her, whether we’re watching TV, reading a book, or just cuddling and giggling.
For me, the biggest way my daughter has impacted my life, is now I get to be the mom and watch her grow into that amazing someone. I see how she becomes more and more independent every day. She is always using her mind and trying to figure things out for herself. At the end of the day, I can see how she’s developing into that great person I know she’s going to be.
Being a young mom hasn’t been easy, but I wouldn’t trade a single moment for anything. Having Alexis in my life has helped me to grow, learn to enjoy and appreciate the little things, and just all around enjoy being a mom. Sometimes I call her my Angel, for I truly believe I would be lost without her. She never ceases to amaze me, and she really has had a huge and positive impact on my life. I only hope I can one day return the favor.
